Choosing A New Puppy - There is a dog breed for every lifestyle
If you enjoy a lifestyle that calls for little or no activity except for changing channels on the couch, do consider obtaining a low-demand breed when it comes to exercise and physical activity. While all dogs do need some degree of exercise on a daily basis, some require much more attention than others in this area.
Some examples of dogs that need to be exercised on a very regular basis and require extra attention include the Boston Terrier, Shih-Tzu, Afghan Hound, Mastiff, Bulldog, English Toy Spaniel, and the Sussex Spaniel.
On the other hand, if you are the type of person who loves to go for a run and enjoy the outdoor life to moderate degrees, a spaniel or retriever might be a good breeding family for you to choose from.
If you are the type of person who wants to take your dogs with you on two intense hikes a day or a couple runs on the beach each day, then consider high-energy dogs such as Labrador Retriever or English Springer Spaniel. These dogs, along with Border Collies and Pembroke Welsh Corgis, are considered the Olympic champions of the canine world.
Some smaller dogs are also quite athletic and are well known for being agile and quick. These include the Papillon and Toy Poodle; they are also quite intelligent, to boot.
If you want a dog that can grow up with your family, pick a mild-mannered canine that is also medium in size. Good examples of these are the Bulldog, Basset Hound, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, and the Newfoundland. Great bodyguard dogs ? both in body and spirit ? are the Doberman Pinscher, German Shepard, Boxer, Mastiff, and Rottweiler, to name a few.
If you are just in need of a dog to accompany you for an occasional outdoor run, but also whom love to have down time just like you, consider the Golden Retriever, English Setter, Australian Shepard, Norwegian Elkhound, or the Irish Setter. Conversely, if sailing is your idea of a relaxing weekend, consider water-friendly dogs such as the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Otterhound, or the Portuguese Water Dog.
